Beyond Middle-earth: Tolkien’s Smaller Works

Tolkien’s major works of fiction, notably The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and The Silmarillion, have attracted a considerable body of scholarly criticism. His smaller works of fiction, such as Farmer Giles of Ham, Smith of Wootton Major, Leaf by Niggle, Mr Bliss, The Father Christmas Letters, Roverandom, The Adventures of Tom Bombadil, or The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth, have as yet not received an adequate treatment by the critics. This is all the more deplorable since most of the texts mentioned are not only of interest in connection with the interpretation of the longer works, but also show us hitherto unknown facets of Tolkien’s creativity. It is the aim of the 2007 DTG/WTP joint-conference in Jena to explore some of these aspects and to redress the critical imbalance.
